Preventing Pipes from Freezing This Winter

Preventing Pipes from Freezing This Winter

Preventing Pipes from Freezing This WinterEarlier this month, we discussed the importance of winterizing your home to prepare for the harsh winter weather to come. Another thing that homeowners, especially new ones, might forget is to tend to their pipes to prevent them from freezing. In addition to protecting your biggest investment with a customized Dayville Home Insurance policy, consider the following tips for preventing your pipes from bursting this winter.

Turn on the faucets.

If the temperatures have dropped into freezing and intend to stay there, turning on your faucets — both indoors and out — can keep water moving through your system and slow down the freezing process. There’s no need to waste gallons of water: Aim for about five drops per minute, says House Logic.

Open cabinet doors.

When the temperatures drop, open up cabinet doors that house plumbing in order to allow warm air to circulate better. While this won’t help pipes that are mounted behind walls, the exposed areas under sinks can be easily warmed this way to prevent freezing and bursting.

Wrap the pipes.

Wear gloves to wrap your freezing pipes with hot towels that have been soaked in boiling water. This will help to melt the ice inside them quickly and get your system running again.

Shut it off.

If your pipes have already frozen, turn off the water from the main shutoff valve. Next, close off any external water sources, such as hoses, to prevent adding to the mess of frozen water in all of your pipes. Remember, your focus once they are already frozen is to prevent them from bursting.
