Summer Boating Safety for Kids

Summer Boating Safety for Kids

Summer Boating Safety for KidsIn our last post, we discussed some of the safety considerations homeowners should remember when it comes to pool safety this summer. This time, we’re going to examine how you can keep your children safe while out on the water. There are going to be plenty of opportunities to enjoy your boat this season, and there’s no reason your jaunts on the water should have to be dangerous. In addition to protecting your vessel with a CT Boat Insurance policy, heed the following advice.

Plan ahead with childproofing.

Make sure your boat is ready to host kids by childproofing it. Winches, windlasses, ropes, gear boxes, ground tackle and other topside equipment should be out of reach, battened or otherwise secured. Make sure all safety gear, such as EPIRBS, flares, and flare guns, are up out of a child’s reach — but never locked away — just in case you need them. Areas where ropes and halyards are located should be off limits since it’s easy to trip or to get a foot or hand wrapped up or caught, explains Discover Boating.

Life jackets.

This goes without saying, but each child on board should have a properly fitting life jacket. Toddlers and babies require specially fitted life vests, so if you’re planning on taking the little ones out, be sure they’re all wearing the right sized jackets.

Basic conveniences.

To make the trip enjoyable and convenient, it’s recommended that you bring an extra pair of clothing, plenty of fluids, and snacks for the kids to have. If your kids are prone to seasickness, consider packing some ginger ale to ease their stomachs. Lastly, the obvious staples of sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat can be the difference of happy campers and cranky kids.
