Keeping Afloat: Independence Day Safety Tips

Keeping Afloat 4th of July Safety TipsIndependence Day is rapidly approaching. While enjoying the sun, the grill, and the water are all staples of the holiday, there are a few tips to remember to ensure you and your loved one’s safety.  Exercising water safety and being mindful of the other risks such as sun exposure and firework injury can guarantee you have a safe and pleasant 4th of July. Be sure to equip yourself with a CT Watercraft Insurance policy before you set out for the lakes or beach. Let’s take a closer look at some essential safety guidelines for the upcoming holiday.

Boat Safety- There’s no better way to beat the heat than to set out on your boat. However, it is critical to be aware of the safety implications. Never consume alcohol while operating a boat- the legal consequences of doing so are similar to driving a car under the influence. Make sure there are enough life jackets for everyone on board and keep a first aid kid handy, as well. Obey safe boating practices and set safety rules for your family. Insuring your watercraft will also protect against any potential damage or injury your boat might cause another.

Firework Safety- According to Protection 1, more than 50,000 fires are caused by fireworks each year. Never point fireworks at yourself or others, avoid lighting multiple fireworks at once, only ignite them while placed on the ground, and never attempt to make your own. Last but not least, never allow children to handle fireworks. Keeping a fire extinguisher on hand is also recommended just in case!

Sun Exposure Safety- It is inevitable you’ll be spending plenty of time outdoors for 4th of July weekend. Limiting sun exposure between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm can decrease your chance of sunburn and dehydration. Remember to drink plenty of water and apply sunscreen with at least 15 SPF frequently. Protective clothing and accessories such as hats and sunglasses will help you stay cool and avoid heat stroke, as well.
