5 Must-Do’s When Moving Into a New Home

Now that you’ve found your perfect home and you’re ready to move in, you’ve likely mapped out the moving process. However, have you thought about the small things? While the process might be overwhelming, it’s important to remember these few critical must do’s when preparing to move into your new home. Change the locks.

According to House Logic,  you should change your locks because you really don’t know who else has keys to your home. That ensures you’re the only person who has access. Install new deadbolts yourself for as little as $10 per lock, or call a locksmith — if you supply the new locks, they typically charge about $20 to $30 per lock for labor.

Steam clean the carpets.

If your home comes equipped with plush carpets, it’s time to get to cleaning. You can rent a steam cleaner from a grocery store for about $30 per day and do the work yourself or you can hire a professional team. Depending on the size, resources, and funds available, you can weigh your options.

Clean the cabinets.

Before placing your dishes and unmentionables in the cabinets, disinfect them with a nontoxic cleaning agent. Wipe inside and out to get rid of gunk and grime and look for any sides of pests or insects.

Clear the decks of any critters.

That includes mice, rats, bats, termites, roaches, and any other uninvited guests. There are any number of DIY ways to get rid of pests, but if you need to bring out the big guns, an initial visit from a pest removal service will run you $100 to $300, followed by monthly or quarterly visits at about $50 each time, says the article.

Find the breaker box.

This is important to note in case a circuit trips or you have an emergency or storm. Get to know which switches control what and get acquainted with the common ones.
