5 Signs to Spot Foundation Damage

5 Signs to Spot Foundation DamageIt’s every homeowner’s biggest nightmare: foundation damage. As these repairs are time-consuming and costly, this is the last news any homeowner wants to hear. However, identifying minor damage before it escalates can save you time, money, and headaches. Therefore, in addition to protecting your investment with a Norwich Home Insurance policy, scan for the following five signs of foundation damage.

Sign #1: Cracked or crumbling foundation.

Start by analyzing the foundation itself. Scan the underlying structure for sagging, hairline cracks, crumbling, gaps, or moisture damage. Be sure to look on the exterior and interior of the home for any signs of these damages.

Sign #2: Water damage or soil shifting.

According to Property Casualty 360, improper water drainage is one of the leading causes of foundation failure. When soil surrounding the home rapidly expands (during wet spells) and contracts (during dry ones), this can lead to unnatural soil shifting — a process that places tremendous pressure on the underlying foundation.

If you have water damage, chances are the foundation is already suffering. Cracks in the foundation can lead water astray and lead to excessive water build up around your home.

Sign #3: Sagging or warped floors and ceilings.

Look for gaps between the floors and floorboards, warped ceilings, and misaligned interior walls as they connect to the ground.

Sign #4: Cracked or crumbling walls.

Homes settle over time, and the building materials used are designed to give a little bit. However, excessive cracking or buckling of walls, especially toward the ceiling, indicates structural damage. Scope out corners, pillars, joints, molding, and chimneys for red flags.

Sign #5: Ill-fitting doors and windows.

If your doors are hard to open or there is space between your windows and the walls, it’s likely a sign of a damaged foundation. Even if this does not indicate foundational damage, these issues should be addressed immediately to prevent excessive heating and cooling costs.
