5 Tips for Safe Summer Boating

Summer is in full swing, which means plenty of sunshine, sand, and family vacations to theme parks. But with COVID-19 still making an impact, the traditional family summer vacation has been somewhat altered. However, there are ways that people can keep their distance from others and still get their summer break fix by heading out on the water for some summer boating fun.

From wakeboarding to hanging out on the boat and listening to music, getting out on the water in any way lets you soak up the sun and de-stress. But before you crank up the engine and head out, it’s important to understand summer boating risks. Here are tips to help keep everyone protected while having a great time out on the water.

Tips for summer boating safety

According to recent statistics, there were more than 600 deaths due to boating accidents in 2019. While this number is slowly decreasing, it still shows the risk of getting out on the water unprepared.

Listed below are five suggested safety and maintenance tips for summer boating in CT. By adhering to them, you and your friends and family can enjoy a great time out on the water.

  • Know What You’re Doing: It’s never a good thing to buy a boat and wing it. Take an online course in boating safety to get better acquainted with the risks. Some states even require this as the first step to summer boating, but it’s still a good idea even if your state doesn’t.
  • Give Your Boat a Safety Check: Just like heading out on the open road, it’s best to give your boat a solid once-over when it comes to safety. The U.S. Coast Guard offers free vessel safety checks, providing expert advice and peace of mind.
  • Let Someone Know Your Plans: Heading out by yourself or just a friend or two? Make sure you let family members or a couple of other friends know where you’re headed and what time you’ll be out on the water.
  • Wear a Life Jacket: While you may hate the awkward tan lines that you’ll get, it’s still essential to wear one. According to statistics from the Coast Guard, more than 80 percent of boating deaths are due to drowning with the victims not wearing life jackets.
  • Avoid Alcohol: Just like drinking and driving, drinking and boating is highly dangerous. Designate a boat driver for the day or limit alcohol consumption altogether while out on the water to keep yourself and everyone else around you safe.

Bonus Tip!

  • Go with Your Gut: Stay alert and steer clear of large boats that can’t maneuver as quickly as yours. Operate at a safe and responsible speed, and if the water presents a challenge, head to dry land.
