No Security System? No Problem: 5 Ways to Deter Burglars

No Security System No Problem 5 Ways to Warn Away BurglarsAs security systems can be expensive and break-in season is rapidly approaching, there are a few steps to take in order to reduce the likelihood of burglary. In addition to CT Home Insurance, these budget-friendly tips can be used to protect your home without turning your home into digital fortress.

Get a Dog- While most correlate home security with a large, intimidating breed such as a Rottweiler or a German Shepard, that doesn’t have to be true. If a home evidently has a dog, burglars are less likely to want to enter because dogs can be difficult to manage, predict, and that can be time-consuming. Even small breeds, like Chihuahuas, can be exceptional watch dogs, albeit for their incessant barking. If you are not able to care for a dog, there are electronic systems available that will release barking and growling noises and are activated by sensors.

Leave Your Car in the Driveway- As this typically means someone is home, burglars are less likely to attempt entry. If you are planning an out of town trip, there are services that rent out driveways to those who need them. This provides additional security for your home on top of some extra money in your pocket.

Don’t Showboat- If you buy a new TV or electronic system, avoid placing it in front of the window or where passersby can easily see. Rather, place the items in an inconspicuous  area of the home to warn off burglars.

Use Landscaping to Your Advantage- Thorny bushes, roses bushes, and sharp leaved foliage should be placed under windows to discourage potential burglars from escaping successfully from your home. However, homeowners should be mindful not to let their back and front yards turn into overgrown jungles as it will provide burglars with additional cover if they decide to hide out on your property, says Mother Nature Network.

Place Security System Signage in Front- You don’t actually need to have a fancy security system to place a sign outside that says you do. The signs only cost a few dollars each, so invest in a few to place throughout your front and back yard to warn burglars.
