A Renter’s Guide to Managing Noisy Neighbors

A Renter’s Guide to Managing Noisy NeighborsWhile renting is a practical housing scenario for the majority of people at some point during their lives, there are inevitable perils that come along with it. Whether it’s a bug infestation or constant maintenance issues, there is no shortage of issues that renters are bound to experience. Unfortunately, noisy neighbors are no exception. Therefore, here is a guide to how to managing noisy neighbors and achieving a comfortable living situation. In addition, secure your belongings and attain peace of mind with a Connecticut Renters Insurance policy.

Be honest about your expectations.

If you view an apartment on a lower level, stress the importance of a quiet residence to the leasing or real estate agent. Ask questions about the tenant upstairs- are they young? Do they have kids? Pets? These are factors that are likely going to play into the noise level in your own dwelling so don’t be shy about asking the agent or landlord. Depending on their reaction and concern, this could be a red flag. If you make your preferences clear up front, and the landlord responds by encouraging you to apply, then you’ve established expectations for the landlord that you can them harangue them about once you move in, says City Lab.

Notify the neighbor.

Speak with your neighbor about any issues you may be having- preferably wait until a serious offense has occurred so you don’t come across as combative. Politely let them know that they are keeping you up, disturbing your work schedule, etc. with their noise. If they are not receptive, or if they are continuously noisy, speak with your leasing office or your landlord. It’s best to let them handle the tenant moving forward to prevent a negative relationship with the neighbor.

File a formal complaint.

While this may seem like the worst case scenario, filing a formal complaint will force the property management to take action. Bear in mind that this might cause a rift between you and your neighbors, but it’s necessary in order to provide a paper trail of the issue and to seek action.
