ATV Riding Tips: Ensuring Safety

ATV Riding Tips: Ensuring SafetyATV riding is an exhilarating experience. However, as most experienced riders can tell you, it takes practice to perfect your technique. Once your initial jitters have ceased and your comfort increases, this pastime is sure to keep the whole family entertained. In addition to securing a comprehensive Norwich ATV Insurance Package, stay safe with these essential riding tips.

Know your ATV

Read the instruction manual and become familiar with your machine. Get a feel for the gear and where all of the controls are located. If you are brand new at riding an ATV, it is recommended you take a safety course provided by a professional. Practice in a safe, open, empty area free of any hazards to get comfortable on your ATV. Remember not to take the ATV out on any public roads, they’re meant for off-roading only.

Posture

According to ATV.com, the following posture for riding is as follows:

  1. Head and eyes up, looking well ahead.
  2. Shoulders relaxed, elbows bent slightly out, away from your body.
  3. Hands on the handlebars.
  4. Knees in towards the gas tank.
  5. Feet on footrests, toes pointing straight ahead.

Be on Alert

Any potential hazards on the trail should be closely monitored. Assign an experienced leader who can keep an eye on the road. Further, loose items like money or credit cards should be secured as riding an ATV tends to shake these items free.

Take your Time

While it may be tempting to try to keep up with more experienced riders, it’s important to take your time. Don’t rush into speeding or making abrupt turns until you are comfortable with the machine.
