Avoiding Common Renter Mistakes

Avoiding Common Renter MistakesAs many people are aware, renting can be a stressful experience. While it’s a cost-effective living solution, the ins and outs of renting can be overwhelming. However, instead of making the common mistakes, heed the following advice to ensure your renting experience goes as smoothly as possible. Furthermore, secure your belongings with a Connecticut Renters Insurance policy.

Mistake #1: Not asking the right questions.

A quick walk-through of the apartment won’t reveal all you need to know about living there. According to Fox News, spare yourself from potential annoyances down the road and make sure you ask the right questions. For instance, how are deliveries handled when no one is home? How are disputes between neighbors settled? Are there quiet hours or is it more of a party place? Are pets allowed? If so, is there an added damage deposit required?

Mistake #2: Not knowing the neighborhood.

Look into the neighborhood you’re thinking about moving into. Are there convenient amenities close by such as grocery stores, shops, and restaurants? If you have children, look into the local schools and determine how safe the new neighborhood is. Take your time and research the area before signing the lease.

Mistake #3: Not documenting damages.

This is in your best interest in order to protect your security deposit. Take pictures of every small hole in the wall, chipped tiles, broken fixtures, etc. Then, notify your landlord and get it in writing so you don’t end up having to pay for someone else’s damages.

Mistake #4: Doing renovations without permission.

Many leases specifically prohibit changing the wall color or hanging shelves. Before you decide to make any changes, check with your landlord to ensure it’s permitted. Otherwise, you’ll be charged for the labor to undo whatever renovations you completed when you move out.
