Car Tips: Maintenance & Damage Prevention

Car Tips Maintenance & Damage PreventionCars are a necessity for our commuting needs, but their maintenance is often overlooked. Whether you use your vehicle every day or only on occasion, there are some maintenance tips that need to be considered to preserve the condition of your car. In addition to securing a Woodstock Auto Insurance policy, make sure to follow these maintenance recommendations.

Tires

Rotate the tires every 5,000 miles and ensure they are properly inflated. Poorly inflated tires can lead to reduced efficiency, comfort, and fuel economy. Next, check the tread. Many tires come with tread wear bars built-in, but if yours don’t have it, just check to see if any grooves are visible in the tires. If not, it means they’re balding and it’s time to replace them. Keep in mind,  the cost of tires is less than a major accident.

Engine

Always make sure there is plenty of oil in the engine. If the engine’s oil level is over the “high” or under the “low” mark, this can cause trouble for your car. Check the oil frequently and add some in if it gets too low. Next, the timing and accessory belts should be checked every 25,000 miles.

Lights

If a blinker is blinking more quickly than the other, it means it’s time for a replacement. Further, be careful when replacing headlights. According to Car Bibles, most headlight bulbs now are filled with halogen and have special coatings on the outside of the glass. If you pick the bulb up by the glass with your fingers, you will leave trace amounts of oil and grease on the glass. Therefore, when it’s used, that part of the bulb will heat up quicker, causing the bulb to crack.

Battery

Batteries need to be changed carefully. Ensure the correct negative and positive sides are aligned when reconnecting a new battery. Further, make sure to disconnect the negative side of the battery first when taking the old one out to prevent an electrical short should a tool be dropped on it by accident.
