If you own and drive a vehicle in Connecticut, in addition to making sure you are financially covered with the correct Connecticut Auto Insurance policy, you want to also ensure that your car is always properly maintained. The winter season is a time to be even more aware of the costs you may incur as a vehicle owner, since you face driving challenges and unique maintenance issues due to snow, ice, and inclement weather.

Connecticut State Rep. Lawrence Cafero points out one winter hazard that many drivers in cold-weather states are far too aware of. This is when a massive chunk of ice becomes dislodged from the top of a truck or car driving up ahead of you and hurtles your way. Not only is this a scary scenario, it can be highly dangerous as it can shatter your windshield, or cause you to have a car accident. A Connecticut auto insurance policy will protect you financially, however protecting yourself physically is vital.

This situation has led lawmakers to create a new ice removal law in Connecticut. In effect as of December 31st, 2013, this new law requires commercial motor vehicles to remove snow and ice from hoods, trunks, and roofs or their operators will face fines ranging from $75 to $1,250. The law does not only apply to commercial drivers though; it affects all drivers in the state of Connecticut.

The law states that Connecticut drivers “shall remove any accumulated ice or snow from such motor vehicle, including the hood, trunk, and roof of such motor vehicle, so that any ice or snow accumulated on such vehicle does not pose a threat to persons or property while the vehicle is being operated on any street or highway of this state.”

Several other states have similar laws to this one, including New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Washington. So far, about 10-15 Connecticut drivers have been cited by state police under this new law, says Lt. Paul Vance, a spokesman for Connecticut State Police. Police are working to educate motorists about the law. Signs are posted at car washes and landfills around the state to remind drivers of the law as well.
