Connecticut Home Insurance: Moving Checklist
Connecticut Home Insurance: Moving Checklist
Moving is a highly stressful and exciting time. You have a million things to worry about and thousands of details to take care of. Here are some moving tips on what paper work needs to be done as you’re packing up the boxes.
Change your address. You can file a change of address with the U.S. Postal service in person or online. It will typically take 7-10 days to take effect, and your mail will be forwarded for up to a year. At this time, take a moment to look over your bank accounts, insurers, credit card companies, subscriptions, most recent employer, loyalty programs, charities and any professional or political groups you may belong to; make sure all the addresses are updated.
Save some money. While you’re at it, take a look at all those address changes you’re making. Do you really need five yearly magazine subscriptions? Do you ever attend meetings for those clubs you pay yearly dues for? Now might be a good time to take a look at what you’re paying to see if you can save some money and a few address changes.
Cancel home services. In addition to the change of address form, you’ll want to make arrangements to cancel services such as cable, internet, telephone land lines and any other utilities. If you are keeping the same utilities provider, you can ask about transferring your account. Make sure you do this all a few days before you want service terminated.
Review bank accounts. Going out of state? Check whether you bank operates in the new state and has convenient branches and ATMs near your new address.
Update insurance policies. If you’re moving to a new state, you’ll need to get a new insurance policy for your vehicle. You’ll also want to make sure you home insurance protects your new place. If you are making and upgrades or adding high-value items you want to make sure it is included in your new policy.
