Connecticut Renters Insurance: CT Tax Break for School Shopping Connecticut Renters Insurance CT Tax Break for School Shopping

The Connecticut sales tax holiday starts this Sunday, August 17, 2014 just in time for back to school shopping. The event is held every year around the third week of August to help consumers save a little extra cash while trying to accommodate their students’ back to school needs. The National Retail Federation estimates that parents across the country spend about $450 on back-to-school shopping. Officials report that on average, customers will spend nearly $250 toward clothes, $125 on shoes, and over $100 on school supplies alone.

During the sales-tax break clothing and footwear costing less than $300 will be sold tax-free and the majority of school supplies are expected to be on sale. The Department of Revenue Services said the state expected to miss out on $7 million to $8 million as a result of the tax holiday. Retail stores on the other hand are hoping to see their revenue increase as a result of the holiday.  For weeks Connecticut store owners have been going through their inventory in preparation for the anticipated purchasing frenzy.

Most clothing items qualify for the tax exemption, including school uniforms, jeans, suits, sneakers, even diapers, belts and hats. However, there are some items not on the list such as some athletic gear, sports equipment and other specialty items. Items that are specifically exempt from tax-free purchasing will include jewelry, handbags, luggage, watches, wallets, umbrellas as well.
