Connecticut Yacht Safety Tips

Connecticut Yacht Safety TipsAs summer winds down, boaters are taking advantage of the last bit of warm weather. While out on the water, safety should be every boater’s first priority, which can help to reduce CT Yacht Liability. The following tips are recommended during any yachting trip.

Weather Wise- Get familiar with the weather conditions prior to setting sail. Tune in to the local radio or TV stations to avoid incoming storms and volatile conditions such as harsh wind, drops in temperature, and lightning.

Create a Checklist- Running through a checklist prior to departure will make you more prepared for your sail. Safety items for passengers such as sunscreen, water, and medical supplies should be included in addition to emergency equipment to sustain the crew in the event of a disaster.

Float Plan- Always notify a friend or family member prior to departing the marina. According to Discover Boating, a float plan should include the following: name, address, and phone numbers of the trip leader and passengers, as well as the boat type of registration information. Last, include the trip’s itinerary and the emergency communication available such as an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) or a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB).

Vessel Safety Check- The U.S. Coast Guard offers complimentary vessel safety checks to ensure all the safety equipment is functioning properly as per state and federal regulations. As this check is free of charge, this is a great way to have a specialist evaluate your vessel and give helpful insight into the safety and maintenance of your yacht.

Common Sense- Take a boating course, avoid alcohol consumption while operating the vessel, and learn to swim if you don’t know how to already. Always keep adequate life jackets aboard to accommodate each passenger. Last, avoid speeding and stay alert of other nearby vessels and buoys that are intended as navigational aids.
