Norwich Food Producers Insurance New FDA Labeling Regulations

The Food and Drug Administration is looking to implement the first new updates to the Nutrition Facts label requirement in twenty years.  Found on almost all commercial food packages in the United States, Nutrition Facts labels help has also been highly beneficial in helping consumers maintain safe and healthy dietary practices. The proposed changes stem from a greater understanding of nutritional science and are designed to updated serving size and new labeling requirements for packaged goods.

Below are some of the key changes, which are open to public comment until this August:  Nutrition Facts label requirement in twenty years.

  • Rework labeling and packaging to make calorie content and serving sizes more prominent to visually emphasize their importance. The packaging will make nutritional facts that are important to addressing current public health concerns such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease more noticeable and easily accessible.
  • The FDA is seeking to require stated information about “added sugars” and their effects on the health of consumers. The new labeling standards will help consumers better monitor their intake of sugars and calories. Data also suggests that sugar additives can decrease the nutrient content of foods while increasing calorie intake.
  • Update daily values for nutrients like sodium, dietary fiber and Vitamin D. Daily values are used to calculate the Percent Daily Value listed on the label, which help consumers understand the nutrition information in the context of a total daily diet.
  • Reassessing outdated serving size requirements to reflect how current consumers eat and drink, which has dramatically changed since the serving size standards were originally established. The law will further require all labeling information on serving sizes to reflect the actual eating habits of the consumers instead of what is recommended. The new policies will require all packaged foods that are typically eaten in one sitting to be labeled as a single serving. The calorie and nutritional information should be declared for the entire package. For example, a 24-ounce soda which is typically consumed in a single sitting would have to be labeled as a single serving.
