Connecticut Home Insurance: Balancing Your Pool’s pH Connecticut Home Insurance Balancing Your Pool’s pH

Is there is anything better than a nice dip into cool waters on a hot summer afternoon? For many Connecticut residents, their swimming pools provide a welcome relief from the sweltering summer weather and a great place to relax and enjoy time with friends and family. They can also be great sources for exercise for kids and adults alike. There are many advantages to having access to your own private pool, but they also require a fair amount of upkeep and maintenance. Pool safety begins with proper care, keeping your pool properly maintained is essential to not only its longevity but your own health.

One of the most important pool upkeep procedures is maintaining the proper pH and chemical balance of your pool water. Fluctuating pH balances can cause damage the physical components of a pool as well as to swimmers. Levels lower than 7.2 are considered too acidic, which can cause plaster, concrete surfaces and metal in the mechanicals to disintegrate and corrode. Higher levels, or more basic water balances, can increase the prevalence of microorganisms and limit chlorine’s ability to fend off bacterial growth. This can allow the growth of an array of health hazards; from mosquitos to E. coli and other illness causing bacteria.

Chlorine monitoring is equally as important as monitoring the pH of your pool water. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, while chlorine is essential in helping prevent and destroys bacteria and algae build ups, it can also bonds with nitrogen-based ammonia to create highly troublesome vaporous and solid compounds.  Ammonia is often found in urine, fertilizer, and other natural compounds which can easily enter a pool through rainwater, soil, swimmers and other exposures.  Experts say that it is the chloramines, not excessive chlorine, which most commonly causes stinging in the eyes and irritation to swimmers skin. While adding more chlorine will breakdown the chloramines, too much will not only irritate skin and fabrics but will corrode essential pool system parts.
