Cooking & Kitchen Safety: Holiday Tips

Cooking Safety Holiday TipsWith the holidays right around the corner, you’re likely going to be spending the next few days scurrying around the kitchen. While the bounty of the holidays is meant to be enjoyed with loved ones, remaining safe in the kitchen is equally important. In order to ensure a safe holiday season, equip your home with a Norwich Homeowners Insurance program and follow these critical cooking safety tips.

Do’s of Holiday Cooking

Plan Ahead- Rather than stress about crowding the oven and stove on the day of, make dishes ahead of time and store them in the fridge. Shop for ingredients and finalize your menu a week before and start doing prep work to avoid frantic multitasking when everyone arrives.

Declutter- Refrain from putting excessive decorations in the kitchen as they can contribute to fire hazards. Too many utensils and appliances just cause clutter and disorganization.

Crowd Control- While most people tend to flock towards the action during the holidays, don’t be shy about steering people away from the kitchen. Set up games and outdoor activities for kids, suggest watching a football game, or have guests help set up the table in order to give you space in the kitchen.

Don’ts of Holiday Cooking

Multitask- While you may want to socialize, answer the phone, or catch a glimpse of the football game, leaving the stove unattended is very dangerous. Celebrity chef and nutritionist Cheryl Forberg states “One distraction often leads to another, so it’s best to unplug completely and focus only on cooking. Stay in the kitchen until cooking is finished.”

Leave Kitchen Unattended- Pots can easily overflow, spilling water and even food onto the burners. Always have someone in the kitchen if you attend to other matters.

Disable Smoke Alarm- While this may seem obvious, Everyday Health states that almost two-thirds of house-fire deaths are the result of homes without working smoke alarms. These detectors are critical in keeping your loved ones and home safe all year round.
