Winterizing Your Car

CT Auto Insurance: Winterizing Your CarCT Auto Insurance: Winterizing Your Car

As winter approaches, there are many important questions to ask yourself, such as “Do I have the right Windham County, CT Auto Insurance policy to protect my finances?” You should also be asking what you should keep in the car with you, what parts you should have checked before driving, and what the importance of your gas and oil are during the winter. Here are some tips for winterizing your car that will answer these questions and more.

Tip #1: Keep an Emergency Kit Inside Your Car

This should include obvious items such as a spare tire and the tools to change out a flat, but some additional things to keep with you are bottles of engine oil, washer fluid and coolant. Flashlights and flares can also be helpful if you’re stuck on the road late at night when visibility levels are low.

Tip #2: Make Sure Your 4-Wheel Drive Works

If your car has a 4WD system, it will improve your auto’s traction on snow and ice. However, it’s important to make sure that everything is working correctly before the winter starts in order to prevent an accident.

Tip #3: Check Your Car’s Belts and Hoses

These items are typically checked when the car is due for a tune-up. But if you aren’t getting a tune-up this winter, you should have a mechanic at least take a look at how everything is holding up around your engine, since cold temperatures can weaken belts and hoses.

Tip #4: Keep Your Fuel Tank Full

It’s never a good idea to let your gas tank run on fumes, but cold and constantly shifting temperatures can cause condensation to form on the walls of an empty gas tank, causing water to eventually drip down into the gas. If water finds its way into the fuel lines, it will freeze up, blocking any flow of gas to the engine.

These are just a few tips on how to winterize your car. Other steps you should take are to replace your windshield wipers and wiper fluid, check your defrosting and heating units to make sure they are working properly, put in the right amount of antifreeze, check your oil and oil viscosity, and check your battery and tire pressure.
