Recently, a lot of emphasis has been placed on the role age plays in motor vehicle accidents and whether younger drivers pose more of a risk on the road than their more experienced counterparts. Countless studies have shown that younger drivers are in fact involved in more vehicle collision on average annually than more experienced drivers, and that the crashes they are involved in are often much more severe. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, age is one of the most important factors of highway safety and should be a major focus for regulators and educators.

While youth are constantly cited as a major contributing factor to an auto accident, many experts believe that gender may be a factor in car accidents instances and severity as well. Many insurers have been using gender to influence auto insurance rates for years, often to the criticism of consumer advocacy groups. However, the fact remains that for years research from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has indicated that males suffer nearly three times as many vehicle accident related fatalities than females.

A recently released study by researchers at Kansas State University takes the gender debate a step further by examining the correlation between youth and gender in a driver’s likelihood of being involved in a fatal accident. According to the study, gender is also often related to the type of severe or fatal crash a driver will be involved in. Research indicates that young female drivers have higher incident rates of intersections and collisions with pedestrian accidents than their young male counterparts. Young male motorists on the other hand show more frequent rates involvement in off-road and night accidents.  The study also revealed that young females are 66 percent more likely to wear seat belts than young males on average. Proper utilization of vehicle seat belts has been directly linked to a dramatic reduction in fatalities during a vehicle collision, which may be connected to the higher number of male fatal accidents.
