The Do’s and Don’ts of Decorating a Rental

The Do’s and Don’ts of Decorating a Rental

The Do’s and Don’ts of Decorating a RentalYou may have your own unique décor style that you can’t wait to show off. Except, there’s only one problem: you are bound by a rental agreement that is stringent on what you can do to spruce the confines of your four stark white walls. With that being said, let us go over the do’s and don’ts of decorating your rental space. In addition, be sure to protect your belongings with a Norwich Renters Insurance program.

#1: Do get permission.

Before painting the walls or updating fixtures, be sure to get permission from your landlord or leasing office. Otherwise, any changes you make to the apartment will come out of your deposit upon moving out.

#2: Don’t bill your landlord.

If you decide to replace an appliance or fixture, it’s best to assume you’re going to take care of it on your own dime. Since the rental agreement protects the original items in your apartment, it’s best not to attempt to negotiate the terms after you sign it.

#3: Do accessorize.

Adding rugs, plants, new hardware, curtains, and lighting can really spruce up a drab apartment. Plus, these are things you can take with you when you do eventually move out!

#4: Don’t use wallpaper.

While it may be trendy right now, dealing with the installation and removal of wallpaper can be a headache you won’t want to face. Instead, try decals, paint stencils, or accent walls to add a pop of color and texture.

#5: Do accentuate.

Work with the space you have by being creative. Create storage and maximize space with a wall shelf. Line shoes, books, hats and fashion accessories across DIY shelves to get those hard-to-reach and pretty necessities out of tangled piles and into view. Look for unused corners of your home normally reserved for dust bunnies, and give them new life, says HGTV.
