A new report from the Insurance Research Council (IRC) estimates that the percentage of uninsured motorists in the U.S. has been steadily decreasing over the past few years.  Each year, the IRC estimates the percentage of uninsured drivers both nationally and on a state by state basis. The IRC collects and analyses data comparing the number of insurance claims made by individuals who were injured in accidents involving uninsured drivers, and claims made by those who were injured by insured motorists.

According to their 2014 Uninsured motorist report, the number of uninsured motorists reached a concerning peak between 2009 and 2012 when nearly 30 percent of American drivers were reportedly uninsured. Their most recent report however indicates that today just over 12.6 percent of motorists do not have the auto insurance. The uninsured motorist problem varies from state to state. California (4.1 million), Florida (3.2 million) and Texas (1.6 million) have reportedly the highest number of uninsured drivers. With roughly 24 percent of drivers who are uninsured, Florida also has the second highest percentage of uninsured motorists of all the state in the nation. The sunshine state falls just behind Oklahoma which has and uninsured motorist rate of just under 26 percent.

Despite the declining in uninsured motorists over the last decade, claims payments for accidents involving uninsured drivers have increased. IRC data suggests that total uninsured motorists claim payment amounts have increased up to 75 percent over the last 10 years. The IRC estimates that $2.6 billion in claim awards were distributed for uninsured motorist claims in the U.S. in 2012. As a result, insured drivers end up paying for injuries caused by uninsured drivers through premium increases, coverage extensions and other fees.
