As winter approached there are a number of concerns for motorists on and off the road. From freezing engine lines to hail and ice, winter weather can wreak havoc on a vehicle not to mention drivers. Seasoned Connecticutians know all too well the countless additional risks to both owning and operating vehicles when the thermometers, but for those who may be new to the Northeast or just new to driving there winter outings can be a shocking and dangerous experience.

Whether you’re a veteran winter driver or this is your first snow season, here are a few things to remember about winter motoring.

Car Care Tips for before you hit the road:

  • Make sure the heaters, defrosters, wipers and lights are functioning properly. While an old windshield blade or dim headlight may not seem like a big concern, these components become key safety features during the winter months to help maintain visibility while driving in winter conditions.
  • Check your tires every few days to make sure that the tread depth and pressure are suitable for the current weather conditions. Cold temperatures will affect tire pressure and improperly inflated tires can be a real problem on the icy roads.
  • Never warm up a vehicle in an enclosed area, such as a garage. Carbon monoxide is deadly and can build up fast especially in confined spaces.
  • Keep your gas tank at least half full and ad antifreeze to your engine coolant system to avoid fluid line freezing.

Out on the road:

  • Never use cruise control when driving on any slippery surface, including wet roads and those which have been de-iced or salted. Motorists need to maintain as much control over their vehicles as possible to be able to react quickly and efficiently in an unexpected situation.
  • Never break on an icy patch especially if you feel your vehicle losing traction, maintaining your speed through the slipping will help drivers maintain control over the vehicle.
  • Break lightly giving yourself extra distance between your targets, and take it slow.
