Hartford Renters Insurance: Dorm Prep for Winter Break Hartford Renters Insurance: Dorm Prep for Winter Break

In the coming weeks, colleges and universities across the United States will close their doors for a very welcome winter break, which means that students will be leaving their dorms and to return to their families and loved ones. When it comes time for college student to head home for the 3-4 week break, there are a few things they should remember to do before rushing home to celebrate the holidays. It is highly important to properly prepare student dorms and apartments for the break and the absence of occupants.

First and foremost, it’s important to secure any valuable items students maybe keeping in their dorm. It is very easy for theft and burglary to occur during breaks when most students are away from their dorms and the campus is quiet. While the one fool proof way to protect valuables dorm items is for students to bring then home, in many cases that’s not very practical especially when it comes to large electronics and other more permanent fixtures. One of the best ways to protect student’s possessions is by obtaining comprehensive Hartford renters insurance which will help recover theft, accidental damage and all other property losses.

Secondly, it’s important that college students clean up their living space before leaving. While it might not sound like a high priority for most college students, the last thing anyone wants is to return to a dorm full of foul odors and pests. Rodents and insects will set up camp wherever they find food, especially when spaces are vacant and there are no interruptions. Students often forget about their late night snack stash in the desk drawer only to return to their dorm to find that some other critters have been snacking. It is also important to clean out the fridge to prevent food from going bad and molding, during the break.

Furthermore, many on campus housing facilities require that students unplug electrical appliances, such as fridges, heaters, light fixtures, etc., to reduce energy consumption while the dorms are unoccupied. Before students leave their rooms they should make sure that all doors and windows are closed and securely fastened and clear all spaces near radiators and heater vents to reduce fire hazards.
