Homeowner Holiday Safety: Halloween Decorations

Homeowner Holiday Safety: Halloween DecorationsHalloween spirit can be shared by both adults and children alike. While festive decorations help set the scene, it is imperative to note the safety precautions that should be taken in order to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday. In addition to Connecticut Home Insurance, these guidelines can promote a safe night and ensure your home remains unscathed by the ghosts and ghouls who visit your home on Halloween.

Decoration Placement- Note the traffic flow in the locations you wish to place your festive decorations. Items that can tip over onto walkways, blow away, or be tripped on should be placed away from high-traffic areas. Next, maintain electrical safety by not overcrowding outlets. Lastly, secure any loose decorations per the instruction manual to prevent damage to your home, your yard, or others.

Beware of Fire Hazards- Although jack-o-lanterns and the like are staples of Halloween décor, they should be placed in safe areas, away from any flammable items and direct exposure to children or their costumes. For the same effect, try using battery operated candles and lights to illuminate your pumpkins. Further, avoid stapling any electrical wires as this may lead to shock or fires, as well.

Choose Decorations Wisely- Crepe paper, dried corn stalks, dried flowers, and more all may look beautiful, but they pose severe safety hazards. Keep these items away from open flames.

Pet Safety- The hustle and bustle of Halloween night could be too much excitement for your pet. According to Mercury News, it is recommended that you keep them separated from the crowds in another room as some pets might become protective over their owner and bite a trick-or-treater to protect them. Lastly, candy and jack-o-lanterns can be deadly for pets and should be kept in a safe location at all times.

Clear the Way- A designated entrance and exit should be indicated in haunted houses and walkways. Weeds, debris, and any rogue items should be removed from the pathways to avoid causing trips and falls. In addition, provide ample lighting for visitors so they can navigate safely.
