Identifying Common Auto Claims in the Fall

As the weather starts to cool and a chill hits the air, a new season of CT Auto Insurance claims begins. Falling leaves create a skidding hazard for drivers as running deer and falling snow establishes the need to be mindful of the road ahead. Did you know that the auto insurance industry can tell you the most common claims for each season? Insurance companies keep accurate and detailed records of when claims occur and what kinds of claims occur in any given month or season. With that in mind, here’s a look at some of the standard auto claims to look out for heading into fall and winter.

Rear-End Collisions

Rear-end collisions occur more in the fall than other seasons due to the changing weather and increased wet conditions. Whether it’s rain or snow, wet roads mean more fender-benders. If you’re following a car, leave at least four seconds between you and the car in front of you. If you’re driving faster than 45 MPH, adjust to allow even more time to come to a stop.

Vehicle Theft

Both vehicle theft and theft from vehicles (I.E. breaking in and stealing objects) rise in the fall. From October through December, more cars are broken into at malls and shopping centers due to increased spending during the holidays. Always place belongings out of sight or in the trunk when going back and forth from your car to stores.

Snow and Ice Accidents

Winter weather, even in warmer parts of the country, create increased road hazards and accidents. More than 70 percent of the nation’s roads are located in regions where snow, sleet, and rain are more common in the fall. More than a third of all skidding and snow claims occur between October and December, and more than 1,300 people are killed every year due to snow and ice conditions.

Accidents Involving Animals

The fall is high time for deer and other animals to be migrating, and often they come across open roadways. Pay close attention at dawn and dusk as these are the busiest times for animals to take to the roads.

While you can’t avoid all accidents, having an understanding of what you’re up against this fall and supplementing that with helpful CT auto insurance can help mitigate risks and costs. Be sure to update your CT auto insurance coverage to prepare for autumn.
