Manufactured Homes: Myths vs. Facts

Manufactured Homes Myths vs. FactsManufactured homes are becoming a common type of housing structure. As the housing market expands and innovative methods of building takes off, it is becoming more conventional to live in either a modular, prefabricated, or manufactured home. In addition to protecting your property with CT Insurance, it is important to clear up some of the common myths associated with manufactured homes.

Manufactured Homes are Tornado Magnets- Many people believe that due to the traditional metal siding on mobile homes tornadoes are inherently attracted to them. However, Weather Notebook discredited this myth by stating “The truth is that tornadoes are in no physical way attracted to manufactured houses of any kind. That would be like saying that snow is attracted to mountains, or hurricanes are attracted to fish.” As there is no scientific evidence of this rumor, it’s safe to say this myth is debunked.

Visually Unappealing- Although the traditional metal sided trailer homes might not be suited to everyone’s tastes; today’s manufactured homes are much more difficult to differentiate between a typical on-site built home. They are made with the same materials as their on-site counterparts and offer a more conventional look, complete with curbside appeal.

Limited Customization- Manufactured homes are just as customizable as on-site homes. Gone are the days of factory produced, simplistic homes. Manufactured houses can be designed to suit your tastes both functionally and aesthetically.

Manufactured Homes have Major Safety Concerns- Manufactured homes follow a strict building code called HUD. These regulations establish standards for the construction and safety of these homes.

They are Difficult to Finance- Because the majority of manufactured homes are placed in permanent locations; these structures are financed as real estate. However, in the past, manufactured homes primarily had to be financed through personal property loans or through savings. Since the modern manufactured home isn’t intended to be mobile, this issue is no longer a concern.
