Money-Saving Tips for Young Renters

Money-Saving Tips for Young RentersAs rent is typically a huge expense, it can cause legitimate financial concerns for young renters. While not everyone is on a budget, it’s still wise to save money where you can. Especially when starting out, having extra money in your pocket is always a good thing. Therefore, in addition to securing your belongings with a Connecticut Renters Insurance policy, heed the following advice.

Negotiate.

If you are renting directly from a landlord, don’t be shy about negotiating rent price. For example, if you plan on signing a 6-month lease, see if they would be willing to come down in price for a longer term. Staying longer benefits the landlord, as well, so see if they can work with your budget.

Get roommates.

While upfront costs of a two-bedroom apartment are more, splitting expenses in half with someone else really adds to your budget. This includes rent, food, utilities, internet, and more. So, instead of paying for all of your necessary expenses yourself, it can be split with your roommate(s).

Referrals.

While there are plenty of online resources, such as Apartments.com and Rent.com, to help people find their next place, word of mouth is ideal for landlords to find trustworthy tenants. Ask your landlord if they would be willing to reduce your rent or give you discounts for the months you help them find tenants.

Be mindful of utilities.

In recent years we’ve all heard the importance of being “green”, which includes using less energy. Yes, this does help the environment, but just as importantly it helps your checkbook! Turn off the lights when you leave the room, don’t leave water running, and be mindful about how long you run your AC.

Take advantage of apartment amenities.

If your apartment complex offers a gym and a pool, take advantage of them! There’s no need to pay an additional monthly membership when you can use your facilities at home.
