New Haven Boat Insurance: Preparing for a Hurricane ew Haven Boat Insurance Preparing for a Hurricane

Many Connecticut residents remember superstorm Sandy which ravished the eastern seaboard just two years ago causing billions of dollars in destruction, interruption and damage. The severity of seasonal storms and inclement weather patterns seems to be increasing year after year causing ever increasing challenges for property owners across the nation. With global climate change all but undeniable, New Haven residents are more frequently dealing with the aftermath of harsh weather events. Planning for the safety and security of your personal property should extend far beyond your home, to all of your assets including your waterborne vessels.

Protecting your boat from hurricanes and superstorms takes extensive preparation and foresight to anticipate the challenges that often accompany these types of weather systems. The four primary hazards of a storm system are: the storm surge, high wind conditions, turbulent tidal conditions and heavy rainfall levels. Storm surges and tidal conditions pose great risks to the safety of floating vessels as water levels often rise above established infrastructure such as docks, moorings and other anchorage systems causing tethered boats to drift beyond their normal fluctuation range. This can place strain on docklines, tethers and other stability precautions. Wind and rain pose structural threats to vessels and can cause costly repairs and damages.

The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) offers boater the following advice when preparing for Hurricanes and other storms.

  • The best precaution is to remove your vessel from the water entirely, relocating it to higher ground and structured storage such as a garage. Storing boats on open land free from trees, wires, power lines and other obstructions is preferable. The DEP indicates that fastening boats to ground anchors can be an extremely effective securing tactic.
  • Reduce the surface area of the vessel by removing all sails, canvases, covers, dinghies, outboard motors and other large obstruction.
  • Remove all electronics, valuables and flammable items from the boat, such as fuels.
  • Close and secure all hatches, windows and doors to prevent internal flooding.  Also close all through hull valves and drains except the bilge drain.
  •  Add extra dock and mooring lines and utilize as many cleats as possible. Lengthen lines at fixed docks to account for storm surges and tidal conditions and tether to extra moorings whenever possible. Adding chafing gear and polyester lines to attach to nylon piling or mooring lines will help absorb shock and protect the lines from increased friction.

While securing your boat in this manner will help, more often than not your boat will suffer some amount of damage as a result of a severe storm.
