Motorcycles appeal to many Americans as a symbol of freedom, rebellion and adventure. While they can be a fun and fuel efficient alternative to four-wheeled vehicles, offering riders a more engaging travel experience, motorcyclists do face many more risks exposures on the road. If you’re looking at purchasing a motorcycle, there are a few things you should understand about your risks out on the road.

Common road hazards are a frequent contributor to motorcycle accidents which can cause severe injuries, property damage and fatalities. Many minor road conditions which are not felt by other motorists can cause motorcyclists to lose their stability, maneuverability and control of their bikes. It is important that motorcyclists understand all the hazards they may face on the to actively avoid such dangers.

Loose rocks, leaves, gravel and other debris are some of the trickiest hazards for motorcyclists to navigate. Often loose debris can be hard to identify and avoid, and can cause loss of maneuverability and traction. Uneven road surfaces such as bridge joints and public transit tracks can trap a wheel in the uneven grooves causing major complications for riders, including stalling. Weather conditions are also huge challenges for motorcyclists. Precipitation not only impairs a driver’s visibility but also greatly decreases the performance capabilities of a motorcycle. Wet roads can be slippery and cause any vehicle to lose traction which often results in a collision.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) motorcyclists are 30 times more likely to die in a vehicle accident than drivers of a four wheeled vehicle.  Only less than half of all motorcycle accident fatalities are the result of single-vehicle crashes, the other are often the result of rider error or operational mishaps. There are thousands of motorcycle fatalities each year. While Connecticut motorcyclists are not required by law to wear helmets, helmet use has been proven helmets to be nearly 40 percent effective at preventing fatalities and nearly seventy percent effective in preventing brain injuries in motorcyclists.
