In our post “Troubleshooting Your House- Part 1” we discussed some of the warning signs provided by Realtor.com that something in your home may need repair. Insurance experts often stress the importance of being alert and ‘listening’ to your house to tell you there is something wrong. Small problems can easily become big, expensive disasters. In most cases you’ll be financially covered as long as you have the right New London Homeowners Insurance policy; however that doesn’t save you from the disruption that home-disasters cause you and your family.

So while we looked at a few signs that you may need to troubleshoot your home in part 1 of this post, what are some others?

Your clothes come out of the dryer too hot or still damp. Lint can clog dryer vents that are too long or kinked. To solve this problem, dryer vent should be kept as short as possible and cleaned at least once a year. In addition, lint traps should be cleaned off every time you dry a load of laundry. Doing so will help your dryer work more efficiently, plus will reduce the chance of a fire!

You and/or your family seem to be affected by indoor allergies when at home. The cause of this may be dirty air filters and dirty ducts in your home’s HVAC system. This can fill your home with sickening mold and bacteria, which can cause illness in people.

Switches and plugs in your home are hot to the touch. This is a symptom of a overburdened electrical system. Switches and plugs that get hot when you use them, sizzling or buzzing electrical boxes, or lights that dim when they aren’t supposed to are all red flags that say you need to upgrade your electrical system.

You notice small holes in wood surfaces. This could very well be a sign that you have termites. Termites do most of their damage where it can’t be seen; inside the wood. So for this reason, it’s important to be diligent about checking any wood surfaces in and around your home regularly.
