In the insurance industry, we’ve heard our fair share of myths and unusual stories. Especially when it comes to automobiles, some false facts have taken hold. Here are the top car myths you should ignore.

Red cars cost more to insure. First of all, the color of a vehicle isn’t something that insurance agencies take into account. And while it would make sense that a red car would be easier to spot on the freeway and thus more likely to get a ticket, that myth has been dispelled as well.

Warm your engine when it’s cold out. Today’s vehicles are built with electronic fuel injection systems that use and ECU (engine control unit) that are used to detect oxygen levels and automatically adjust the fuel-air ration. In other words, letting your car idle for a few minutes to adjust to the cold temperature is no longer necessary.

Premium fuel must be better. Using premium fuel in your vehicle won’t help its performance. A higher-octane number simply means that the fuel is less prone to pre-ignition problems, so it’s used for hotter-running, high compression engines. In other words, if you don’t need it, don’t waste your money.

Dish-washing and laundry detergents make a good car wash. Detergent can strip off a car’s wax finish. Use a car-wash liquid that cleans without removing wax.

All-wheel drive will help you dodge objects and take corners faster. Even the most advanced systems don’t help a driver avoid road hazards or grip the pavement in corners. So stay safe and ease up when going around the bend.
