Police Out to Catch Distracted Connecticut Motorists In April

Police Out to Catch Distracted Connecticut Motorists In AprilConnecticut law enforcement officials will be out in force this month in a state wide campaign to curb distracted driving. Some 50 police departments across Connecticut are targeting drivers who are illegally using cellphones while operating their vehicles. Campaign funding is coming from a $2.3 million grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to pay for the campaign dubbed “U drive. U text. U pay.” Connecticut is reportedly the only state to receive such a grant.

According to reports, law enforcement agencies throughout the state have already dolled out hundreds of tickets during the first week of the monthlong, statewide effort to prevent distracted driving. Connecticut Department of Transportation officials were inspired by staggering statistics about distracted driving when they first initiated a similar campaign in September 2014. According to federal statistics, some 3,154 people were killed and an estimated additional 424,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes directly linked to distracted driving. Officials state that young and unexperienced drivers are especially at risk. According to a 2014 article in the New England Journal of Medicine, the risk of vehicle collision or near-crash among novice drivers increased with the performance of many secondary tasks, including texting and dialing cell phones.

In Connecticut, the fine for a first offense is $150. This fine doubles to $300 for second offenders, and jumps to $500 for a third offense. However, these are not the only expenses Connecticut motorists can expect should they be caught texting or talking on their mobile phones while driving. These violations also directly impact a motorist’s auto insurance rates, and can make it very difficult to access the cheapest car insurance in CT. Because distracted driving is directly linked to higher likelihood of an accident, insurers often treat these violations as they would a speeding violation. While the first offense might not be too impactful for a motorist with a strong driving record, those with a history of violation or poor driving record will likely see dramatic increases in the Connecticut car insurance premiums.
