Preparing Your Home for Winter

Preparing Your Home for WinterWinter is right around the corner, and the cold weather has already started to set in. While you may be looking forward to the coming holidays and attempting to juggle a bunch of obligations at once, it’s important to prioritize a few chores around the house to secure your home for the winter. After all, what fun will the holidays be if your heater breaks in a snow storm? In addition to protecting your investment with a New London County Home Insurance policy, heed the following preparation tips.

Tune up your heater.

According to Kiplinger, for about $80 to $100, a technician will inspect your furnace or heat pump to be sure the system is clean and in good repair, and that it can achieve its manufacturer-rated efficiency. The inspection also measures carbon monoxide leakage.

Reverse your ceiling fan.

If your fans are equipped with a reverse button, run them in a clockwise position to push the warm air down from the ceiling. Do this while running your heater to keep each room in your home warm and comfortable.

Prevent ice dams.

Icicles and ice dams have the ability to cause significant damage to your home. Have a contractor and an energy auditor fix leaks in your attic and insulation.

Inspect the roof.

Be sure to patch any missing or damaged shingles to prevent leakage from snow and rainfall. If you just need to patch a few sections, you can enlist the help of friends or a neighbor. However, if your roof requires a lot of work, it’s recommended you hire a professional to ensure the job is done correctly.

Divert water.

Add extensions to downspouts so that water runs at least 3 to 4 feet away from the foundation, says the article. Remember, water that seeps back into the earth around your home can damage the foundation, cause leaks, and lead to mold!
