Protect Your Boat This Season: Winterizing Tips

Winterizing your BoatAs the biting cold of winter approaches, boat owners need to take the proper precautions to protect their valuables from the effects of harsh weather. In order to properly prepare, ensure you are equipped with Connecticut Boat Insurance and consider the following tips.

Marine engines stored in cold regions require winterization procedures to eliminate internal water freezing that results in the expansion of metal parts within the engine, says the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services. As such, the following four tips are recommended.

Beware of Rusting- Idle parts of the engine are prone to rust during the off season and can result in similar destruction as freezing parts. Therefore, consider a corrosion inhibitor to ensure the safety of your boat’s engine and its internal/external parts.

Fogging Oil- This protective oil can be used to lubricate cylinders during the winter. In addition, the carburetor and spark plugs can be coated with this oil to prevent corrosion and rusting.

Winterization Products- Products containing ethylene glycol and propylene glycol are the most effective at protecting your engine throughout the cold seasons. These antifreeze products should be used to flush and coat the engine and any remaining fluids should be dispelled, as well. Bear in mind that propylene glycol is the more environmentally sound product when considering the safety of your marina in which your vessel is stored.

Make Repairs Immediately- As spring time brings a flurry of repairs, don’t procrastinate. Making the necessary fixes on your boat prior to locking it up for the winter can improve the health of your vessel and can be completed much quicker than the warmer seasons.
