In 2010, a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) survey found that adding autonomous cars, or driverless cars, to the road, up to 81% of vehicle crashes can be avoided. As we mentioned in a previous post entitled “How Will Driverless Cars Affect Us?” not only does this mean our roads will be safer for us and those around us, but insurers will be paying less to attorneys, hospitals, etc. In theory, this should mean that drivers should discover that they save money on premiums.

Insurers and drivers are not the only people that will be saving money though. Experts theorize that driverless cars will also benefit the government and the economy, saving money all around. How can this be so?

First of all, driverless cars will instantly reduce congestion and expand road capacity by enabling more cars to travel closer together in a single lane. Vehicle-to-vehicle communication could bring us closer to a world without car crashes, meaning less wasted resources responding to minor accidents. Finally, roads will endure less wear and tear since GPS systems will direct trucks and heavy vehicles toward more suitable routes.

The Eno Center for Transportation recently estimated the annual economic benefits of autonomous vehicles at roughly $211 billion a year, and that’s if only half the existing fleet of vehicles in the U.S. goes driverless. It’s estimated that if 90% is converted, the monetary benefits will more than double. It is believed that when autonomous cars do hit the road (which is expected as early as 2018) that many existing transportation inefficiencies will have been address without any government action at all, yet will still benefit the government, therefor benefiting the overall economy.
