Resolving Contractor Conflicts on your Home

Resolving Contractor Conflicts on your HomeYour home is your safe place and likely your biggest asset. So, if you’ve recently made a decision to renovate some of its dated components, you’re in good company. From simple upgrades to complete overhauls, renovations can significantly increase the value of your home. However, you can’t go it alone. So, what happens if there is a dispute with one of your contractors? Below are some ways to manage a potentially sticky situation. More importantly, however, is ensuring your home is properly protected with the right Dayville Homeowners Insurance policy.

If you have paid your contractor for unfinished or unsatisfactory work, you are not helpless. In an effort to get your money back, keep records of the payments you made to your contractor. Even unofficial documents that prove your payments can work.

Next, write a formal letter to the contractor letting he or she know about your concerns and give them a set due date for them to respond. Be sure to notify them that legal action will be taken should they fail to meet your requirements, as well. If this does not warrant a response, Kiplinger recommends find out where the contractor is licensed (check with state, county or city agencies), and submit a complaint to the appropriate office; many agencies will step in to investigate and mediate a dispute, and some state agencies have funds to reimburse consumers who are left high and dry.

If the contractor is not under the umbrella of a licensing board, you may be required to settle the case in court. If the contractor limit was $15,000 or under, you can handle it in small claims court. However, if the sum is more than that, you may want to consider hiring an attorney to manage the claim.

While contractor disputes can be stressful, it’s important to understand just how to go about them to reduce your losses. By following these steps, you are more likely to get your money back and be able to complete your home project.
