Attention Snowmobilers: Safety Tips

Attention Snowmobilers Safety TipsSnow season has arrived and now is the time to bring your winter vehicles out of storage. As the mountains continue to pile up with snow and people start to enjoy winter sports again, snowmobiles are likely going to speckle the winter trails. However, safety should be each rider’s first priority. In addition to protecting your vehicle with Connecticut Snowmobile Insurance, follow these recommendations to ensure a safe and fun winter season.

Never Drink and Ride- This should come as no surprise. Many states enforce a ‘Zero Alcohol’ consumption policy before and during a ride. As alcohol is a key factor in the majority of fatal accidents, it is important to keep your vision, coordination, and reaction time alert.

Bring a Friend- In the event your snowmobile becomes disabled, your friend will be able to help you so that you are not stranded. If you have to go alone, let a family or friends know of your planned route and when you will be returning.

Dress for Safety- Always wear a helmet with a facemask. Gearing up with snowmobile suits, bibs, jackets, gloves and mittens should cut the wind, repel water and keep you ventilated, says the Minnesota’s Department of Natural Resources.

Stay on the Trail- Venturing off is both unsafe and considered trespassing in most cases. Further, if you have an accident off the trail, it is less likely people will be able to locate you to provide help.

Avoid Ice- Especially those areas with water flowing on top or underneath, the ice could be too thin to support the weight of the snowmobile. As snow prevents thick ice from forming, these areas can be particularly dangerous. Instead, stick to the marked trails.
