Summer Activities: Kid Pool Safety

Summer Activities: Kid Pool SafetySummer is right around the corner, which means pools are going to be used now more than ever. If you’re one of the many homeowners who has a pool in their backyard, be sure to consider the following safety precautions to prevent injury on your property. Especially with young children around, ensure you’re well-prepared to handle the summer season without incident. Second, protect your home and your property with a comprehensive Norwich Home Insurance policy.

Put barriers around your pool.

Completely surround your pool with a 4-feet high fence or barrier with a self-closing, self-latching gate. Place a safety cover on the pool or hot tub when not in use and remove any ladders or steps used for access. Consider installing a pool alarm that goes off if anyone enters the pool, suggests American Red Cross.

Keep eyes on the kids.

Kids naturally are going to want to get their energy out at the pool, chase each other, and have a good time. However, make sure you have at least one set of eyes on the kids, especially young children. If you have infants, make sure to not let them roam in the backyard unattended. Consider having your children and their friends swim with a partner rather than alone.

Know their swimming ability.

This probably goes without saying, but while you know your own kid’s swimming abilities, that doesn’t necessarily mean you know their friends’ abilities. Ask their parents ahead of time whether or not they’re comfortable swimming in addition to keeping an eye on them. If your kids aren’t prepared to swim, a simple swimming course can give them the confidence they need and can save their lives.

Keep it clean.

The pool needs a combination of chemicals, filtration, and circulation to stay crystal clear. Make sure these levels are checked and monitored regularly to reduce the likelihood of illness.

Have a plan.

Everyone knows not to run in a public pool setting, but what about at home? Kids might be more comfortable in a residential setting. Enforce the commonly known rules such as walking only, no running, swimming with a buddy, and no swimming without supervision.
