Summer Boating & Kids: Mind the Small Things

Summer Boating & Kids: Mind the Small ThingsIn this series of posts, we have explored the basics of boating safety when children are involved, how to childproof your boat, and how to find the right life jacket for your little ones. In this last installment, we’re going to cover the basics of making sure your boating trip with your kids is a positive and fun one. From entertainment to sunscreen, we’ve got you covered. In addition to protecting your vessel with a CT Boat Insurance policy, heed the following advice.

Bring sunscreen.

No one is going to have fun if you have a sunburned baby on board. Bring the right protective gear, including hats, umbrellas, sunglasses and sunscreen for your kids. A quick spray or slather of sunscreen can make all the difference on your boating trip.

Bring motion sickness medicine.

According to Better Boat, some kids get motion sickness on the boat when there’s a good chop on the water.  Bring a peppermint stick for seasickness and it can rescue an otherwise unpleasant trip.  Dramamine and other drugs are not okay for kids, so this is a great alternative.

Hungry kids can be prevented by bringing simple yet healthy snacks on board. Try the following:

  • Granola bars
  • Sweet potato fries
  • Dried and fresh fruit
  • Vegetables
  • Any baby formulas needed

Makeshift movie time.

Kids are notorious for their short attention spans, so what better way to entertain them than with a makeshift movie night?

If your boat has a power supply or cigarette lighter that you can use an adapter on, one way to really convince them they like boating is to watch a big movie on the boat with a projector.  Hang a white sheet down from the bimini and set the projector at the bow.  It’s the perfect way to end a day on the water, explains the article.
