Hitting the road in a motorhome is a favorite American pastime, especially in warmer months. It’s important to remember though, that just because an RV may be stored away for the winter doesn’t mean you should skip on maintenance tasks. In addition to making sure you are financially protected from damages by having the right Windham County RV insurance policy, you’ll want to avoid costly repairs by making sure your motorhome runs as smoothly as possible. Here are some motorhome maintenance tips to last year all year long.

Check the A.C. once a month. Make sure the drain holes aren’t clogged. These allow condensation to drip onto the top of the rig and down the side. If they’re clogged, the water has to go somewhere- inside the rig where it can damage the frame, insulation, and wiring.

Check tire pressure before every trip. This is especially important if the RV stays in the backyard, driveway, or in storage. Underinflated tires are far more likely to go flat or have a blowout. Be sure to do a visual inspection as well; the sun’s UV rays will destabilize the rubber over time.

Maintain water storage tanks. When returning home from a trip, stop at a dump site and empty the freshwater, gray water, and black water tanks. When storing the RV over the winter, fill the water lines with RV antifreeze. Don’t use regular auto antifreeze!

Follow your generator’s manual for instructions on maintenance. In addition, at least once a month, turn the generator on and allow it to run for at least an hour. This way in an emergency, you’ll know it works.

Purchasing a motorhome is a huge investment, and requires many financial considerations. Not only are you responsible for maintaining another “home”, you also have to remember that you’ve added another vehicle that needs to be maintained as well. When looking at your financial obligations related to owning a motorhome, it’s important to make sure you have the right Windham County RV insurance policy.
