Winter Car Maintenance Tips

Winter Car Maintenance TipsIn our previous post, we discussed how to properly prepare your boat for the harsh winter. As commuting is a necessary component for most, let us now take a closer look at how to maintain your vehicle during the winter months. Whether you are scraping ice off your windshield or putting chains on your tires, CT Auto Liability can be reduced by following these recommendations.

Get Rid of Compost- Similar to the havoc it can wreak on your gutters and lawn, fall’s compost can result in damage to your vehicle. Leaves, twigs, and branches should be removed immediately to prevent build up in your car’s pipes and ventilation, which can lead to corrosion over time. Clean out the vent beneath your windshield to ensure proper ventilation.

Tires- While “all-season” tires are more popular these days, it is important to be mindful of the features of these tires that prove inefficient in harsh winter weather. The wide and low profile of tired, on balance, makes a tire worse in the snow, according to Kiplinger. Modern winter tires are more effective on snow and ice and are less noisy on dry roads, as well. Further, make sure your tire pressure is adequate as they usually lose pressure during cold weather.

Snow Wipers- Most windshield wiper life spans are only about one year. Beam blades are the most effective for wiping heavy rains and show off your windshield as they are not equipped with an external spring, which often seizes up in freezing temperatures.

Service- Having your vehicle “flushed and filled” to prepare for the winter months is advised. However, if you’ve been diligent with your scheduled services, chances are your car’s antifreeze levels are adequate.

Battery- To avoid being stranded in the snow, stop in to your local repair shop to check your battery. This can be done quickly to determine if you need a new one before it goes out for good.
