Winter Considerations: Heating Safety

Winter Considerations: Heating SafetyThe biting cold of winter makes it nearly impossible not to run the space heater or fireplace for hours on end. However, while the comfort of these amenities is undeniable, operating them can be quite dangerous. Each year, these features result in fires across the nation and cause millions in property damage and even worse, loss of life. Therefore, in order to keep your household safe, ensure you follow these safety tips for keeping your apartment warm this winter. In addition, take the protection of your property and your belongings one step further by securing the best Connecticut Renters Insurance policy.

Kerosene and space heaters.

Keep all heaters at least three feet away from any other objects at all times. Next, make sure all power cords and exhaust ports are not worn or defective to prevent the risk of fire. Further, never overfill the fuel reservoir on kerosene heaters and be sure to store the excess in a safe, well-ventilated area.

Stoves and fireplaces.

Never use stoves as a source of heat in the apartment. Instead, use the designated fireplace for warmth. Keep a screen in front of the fireplace to prevent burning embers or ash from escaping and to prevent unwanted materials from getting stuck inside. Next, make sure the chimney is cleaned at least once a year, and keep the fireplace free of ash and creosote buildup, says Interstate Restoration. Lastly, never light fireplaces with flammable liquids.

Sweat the small stuff.

Little things around the apartment should also be considered. For example, keep fresh batteries in all of your smoke detectors and ensure each one is functioning properly. Next, if your pipes freeze, defrost them with hot water rather than an open flame.
