Winter Driving Safety Considerations

Winter Driving Safety ConsiderationsWith the recent winter storms, motorists are facing even more challenges on the road. Battling snow, ice, and rain can make for a dangerous commute, so taking the proper safety precautions is a must. From braking gently to easing into corners and securing the right CT Car Insurance, here are the best winter driving defenses.

Remember to accelerate and decelerate slowly. It takes more time to stop on icy roads, and doing so gradually will help to prevent skidding. Further, if you do start to skid, gently take your foot off the gas to regain traction quickly.

Don’t stop if you can avoid it. There’s a big difference in the amount of inertia it takes to start moving from a full stop versus how much it takes to get moving while still rolling. If you can slow down enough to keep rolling until a traffic light changes, do it, explains AAA.

Next, give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination. Everything takes longer on icy and snowy roads versus dry pavement including stopping, accelerating, turning, and minding the traffic. It’s also important to invest in anti-lock brakes. If you must activate them, apply firm pressure on your brakes – remember it’s perfectly normal to feel the pedal vibrating when this occurs.

Lastly, use inertia to your advantage. In other words, don’t power up hills or stop midway up. Instead, get some inertia going before starting up the hill to gradually increase speed to make it all the way up. Otherwise, you could get stuck halfway up the icy slope.

Lastly, stay home. If you don’t have to be anywhere, consider foregoing braving the roads altogether. Enjoy the snow and wintry conditions from the comfort of your home.
