According to a recent report released by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), a lofty seventy-one 2015 vehicle models received one of the IIHS’s two prestigious safety awards. This time last year only thirty-nine vehicles received either the TOP SAFETY PICK or the TOP SAFETY PICK + distinction, which was an increase at the time from previous years. This yeah however, the number of winners in the TOP SAFETY PICK+ tier has increased by 11, despite tougher standards for front crash prevention. This year there are 33 TOP SAFETY PICK+ winners and 38 TOP SAFETY PICK winners.
According to IIHS representatives, the standards for achieving the TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards have been growing increasingly stringent for the last three years. To attain the higher honor, vehicles must pass not only the TOP SAFETY PICK standards, but they must also have an available front crash prevention system that earns an advanced or superior rating. The traditional TOP SAFETY PICK criteria were revised last year to include a good or acceptable rating in the small overlap front test and a good rating in each of the Institute’s four other crashworthiness evaluations.
Previously, to qualify for the TOP SAFETY PICK a vehicle’s warning systems simply had to meet the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s performance criteria but did not need to include autobrake capabilities. For an advanced or superior rating, the TOP SAFERTY PICK+, vehicles must have the ability to stop or slow down without driver intervention before hitting a target when tested by the IIHS at 12 mph, 25 mph or both. In essence, the top tier safety rating ensures that the crash avoidance technology is both present and functioning to the IIHS’s standards in 2015 vehicle models. Vehicles with the TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating are recommended by the IIHS for motorists whose top priority is protecting themselves and their loved ones on the road.
