Real Costs of Boat Ownership: Maintenance CostsUnderstanding the reality of expenses associated with boat ownership is something each person should do before buying into their hobby or passion. We’ve already covered the basics of insurance, including how much you need and what it covers. Now, we’re going to take a closer look at the projected maintenance costs you’ll need to pay to keep your boat looking sharp and running smoothly. Arguably the most important expense and line of defense for any boat owner is their Windham County Boat Insurance policy.

Yard labor.

If you’re not a DIY’er, the reality is you’ll need to pay someone to regularly maintain your boat. Rates range from $1.00 to $12.00 per foot, depending on the service. Services, such as preparation of customs forms (where offered) to consulting with an Exotic Materials Specials, can run from $10 to $70 per hour. Rates are labor only – you will pay extra for materials and, in some cases, you will pay an hourly rate for an assistant to a specialist. In some yards, you will pay utilities on top of everything else, says All at Sea.

Bottom job.

Barnacles and other marine life can attach to the hull of your boat. It’s a long and tedious process to remove them, which is why you’ll need to get a “bottom job” regularly. It’s approximately $6-$10 a foot for this job, not including paint. If you need paint to touch up the surface, this could cost you up to $340 a gallon.

Pressure wash.

On average, this costs approximately $9 per foot. Depending on how much of it you can do yourself, you can determine the estimated cost.

Fuel.

Determine how much fuel you can afford each month for the style of boat you have, unless you have a sailboat. Price it out to determine how often you can afford to use it.
