How to Protect Your Home Against Property Damage

How to Protect Your Home Against Property DamageNo one plans for their home to get damaged, but accidents happen. One out of every 15 U.S. homeowners insurance policyholders files a claim on their homeowners insurance each year, and standard property damage claims make up a significant portion of these claims. In order to reduce the risk or the amount of these claims, it’s important for homeowners to have a robust Homeowners Insurance policy and reinforce their homes against damage.

Non-Natural Event-Related Water Damage

Non-natural events that bring about insurance claims may result from the accidental discharge of supply lines or hoses from appliances that use water, such as washing machines or dishwashers. Busted pipes or other plumbing issues also commonly cause problems. To avoid or minimize water damage from non-natural events, position a water sensor and alarm near appliances that use water. You may want to apply an automatic shutoff system.

Be sure to monitor and check old appliances and hot water heaters for leaks and cracks. Replace appliances with significant damage. Don’t forget to caulk around toilets, sinks, and tubs to prevent plumbing leaks. Never pour grease or other thick substances down your drains; this will clog your pipes, leading to water overflow and damage.

Weather-Related Water Damage

Bad, wet weather can damage your home in one form or another. To help prevent roof damage, remove excess water or snow as best as possible.

After a long winter, the spring melt could cause flooding. Take note that standard homeowners insurance doesn’t usually include flood coverage, so consider upgrading your policy if you live in a flood-prone area. Also, notice the grading on your property. Land that slopes away from your home can help minimize water damage to your home, as this helps water drain away from the building instead of toward it.

Prevent further damage from heavy rains by keeping your gutters and downspouts clear of leaves, twigs, and other debris so that water is able to drain properly and further away from your home to protect your foundation.

Disasters and accidents happen quite often without warning. However, you are able to reduce your risk of financial loss in utilizing certain situations. Choose the right Connecticut home insurance policy for your home and family, and be proactive about home maintenance and safety to help prevent damage and injury from occurring in the first place.
