What Not to Bring to Your College Apartment

What Not to Bring to Your College ApartmentCollege apartment living is one of a kind. It is a time you will look back on for the rest of your life, so do what you can to make it a great experience. With the fall semester approaching, you will need to be prepared for all that is to come. There are certain items you will want to make sure you have, but just as importantly there are things you will want to make sure you do not bring to your apartment.

Here are some tips to stay in the clear while you get settled in, and throughout your time in college housing.

Items You Won’t Use

While packing, you will most likely find a bunch of miscellaneous items that you have never used or will most likely never use again in the future. Take advantage of this time as means to clear out and get rid of all the clutter. It’s common for college students to live with roommates in smaller apartments, so minimizing the amount of clutter will be your best move.

Instead of lugging around items that just take up precious space and collect dust, throw them away or donate them to someone who needs it. This will make the move so much easier and will help to fit everything you actually need. Or, if the items are gently used, consider selling them to a secondhand store or thrift shop to get some extra cash for the school year.

In terms of college living, less is really more! Not only will you have limited space, but most colleges have very strict policies about the conditions of dorm rooms, apartments, and other shared areas. Also, you likely won’t be attending college on a deserted island. Even if your campus isn’t in a metropolitan area or a bustling college town, there will still be some stores nearby to pick up the essentials. Make packing easier on yourself and wait until you’re settled in to pick up some last-minute essentials.

Restricted Items

Before bringing any of the following items, contact your future housing office or landlord and ask about the rules and regulations for your specific residence halls or apartments. You may find that there is more banned from your college apartment than you would have thought, because the housing needs to make sure the building and residents are safe.

Many schools have a large list of restrictions and that you can normally find easily on their website. Here is a list of commonly prohibited items:

  • Air conditioners
  • Extension cords
  • Candles
  • Pets
  • Nail picture hangers
  • Darts and dart boards
  • Drugs
  • Fireworks
  • Free weights over 50 lbs.
  • Gasoline or accelerants
  • Halogen lamps
  • Hotplates
  • Large Grills
  • Lava lamps
  • Nerf guns
  • Scooters
  • Shot glasses
  • E-cigarettes
  • Space heaters
  • Swords or other weapons
  • Toaster ovens
  • Toasters
  • Water guns
  • Weapons

As you finish up your packing for your college apartment, don’t forget to bring one final thing with you: a renter’s insurance policy. Landlords in college towns are often more lax, so this policy may not necessarily be required for you, but it is something that you should have. You never know what could happen, and you don’t want to weigh down your college experience with the costs of an accident. If the price is a concern for you, don’t worry. Many renter’s insurance policies are very affordable, and here at Byrnes we offer a special Renters Insurance for College Students, which will provide the tailored protection you need at a very reasonable price.
