Summer Riding Safety: Recognizing & Preventing Heat StrokeIn our last post, we explored some of the common health and safety hazards motorcycle riders face in summer. Extreme temperatures and exposure to the elements can make for a risky trip, but that doesn’t mean you have to skimp out on the trip altogether. In this article, we’re going to discuss how to identify and prevent heat stroke and heat exhaustion from occurring, promoting an incident-free motorcycle journey. Regardless of where you intent to ride, protect your bike with a Windham County Motorcycle Insurance policy.

According to WebMD, the hallmark symptoms of heat stroke include the following:

  • Dizziness/light headedness
  • Headache
  • Lack of sweat even in extreme temperatures
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Muscle weakness
  • Shallow breathing
  • Disorientation and/or confusion

Heat stroke prevention.

While on the road with full exposure to the sun, it’s important to wear the right clothing to protect your body. In addition, bikers can take breaks every so often to cool off in an air-conditioned location. These pit stops can be planned ahead if you’re traveling with friends. Next, be sure to drink plenty of water.

Because you’re on the road and limited resources are available, prevention is key. However, if you start to feel any of these symptoms, pull to the side of the road and take cover in a shaded area. Drink plenty of water and take as much time as you need to feel comfortable and return to your normal state. If possible, remove layers of clothing once you’re inside an air-conditioned location.
